Hardwood Updates: Rip Out That Carpet

Hardwood Floors

When I built my house I had lots of hard choices to make. What kind of cabinets do I want? How many different colors can one house be painted? Budget was a factor. Some choices were based on what I could afford, not on what was my top choice. Now it’s years later and I’m ripping out as many of those second…or third…or fourth choices as I can. Starting with the carpet.

Every year my allergies get a little worse, so hardwoods were a no-brainer. I saved my money and shopped for a good deal on the flooring and finally…hardwoods everywhere! OK, not everywhere. I left the title in the laundry room and full bathrooms. But hardwood everywhere else. That includes the kitchen, powder room and bedrooms. Even my closets. Yep, all of those rooms where someone told me I would probably want to leave the carpet or tile? I totally didn’t listen. And I totally don’t regret it.

For one thing, it’s gorgeous. But more than that…now I can breathe. Breathing is totally not over-rated. It lives up to the hype. I’m not saying that my allergies have gone away completely. I’m just saying hardwoods were a huge, huge help in making them suck a little less hard.

Of course thinking of hardwoods means a whole ‘nother batch of choices. What wood? What finish? I was leaning towards darker finishes, and had a few loved ones express concern that I might regret that choice. Bona Free & Simple
