Homemade Sugar Wax Recipe

Homemade No Strip Sugar WaxHaving tried pretty much every method of hair removal known to man, I have to say this is definitely one of my favorites. It’s also easy to make-you probably have everything already in your kitchen!

You’ll need sugar, water, and lemon juice. That’s it! You can try this without a candy thermometer, but it’s definitely easier with one.

Just add one part water to two parts sugar in a small saucepan. Add a splash of lemon juice. Cook over medium high heat, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. If you are using a candy thermometer you’ll continue to cook the sugar until it reaches the “hard ball” stage. If you don’t have a candy thermometer you’re going to look for the sugar to darken in color. It will go from clear to champagne to amber fairly quickly.

Take the mixture off the stove and allow it to cool. Once it’s reached room temperature it’s ready to use.

Homemade Sugar Wax Hair RemovalTake a spoon of the sugar wax and roll it into a ball. If the wax is too brittle that means you’ve cooked it for too long and will need to try again. If it’s too gooey and soft it hasn’t been cooked long enough and can go back on the stove. It might start out messy but should roll fairly quickly into a neat ball.

No Strip Sugar WaxThen just take the ball of sugar wax and spread it on your skin with the direction of your hair growth. (Skin must be clean, dry and held taut.) Then just grab the wax and pull back against the direction of hair growth. That’s all there is to it! The really cool part of this is you can use that same sugar wax over and over. Just take it and roll it in a ball again and repeat. It actually works better the more you use it! You can go over the same area a few times if it’s needed, but watch for signs of skin irritation if you use it more than once in the same spot.

Additional cool things about this recipe? You don’t need to use cloth strips as with most waxes. If you get it on an area by accident where you did not intend to remove hair just melt it off with warm water. You can store whats leftover in a closed container to use later. (Just a few seconds in the microwave if needed.) And did I mention you probably have everything you need already in your kitchen?

    Hi Lily!
    It totally depends on your pain threshold and the area being done. Holding the skin taut is the most important. If your skin isn’t taut it can and probably will hurt. With the skin hurt it’s not too bad in most areas. Legs and arms, really easy. Other areas, as you can imagine, can be a bit more tender.

    How much lemon juice is a “splash”? I *really* want to try this out, and I don’t want it to not turn out right. I like to be precise when I’m making something for the first time.

      I’d say around a teaspoon. The measurements are less important than the cooking time and temperature for this. If it’s too gooey you’ll know you need to cook it a bit longer. If it’s too brittle you cooked it too long and will have to start over. Good luck!

      I’ve only ever tried the lemon and lime juice, but it could possibly work without either if you get the cooking time and temperature right! I’m curious about the vinegar, too! It might be time to experiment!

    I am currently trying to make this right now, and I was just curious about how long it takes on the stove before it turns the right color? Also, is it supposed to boil? Thanks!

      It will be bubbling before it’s ready. It will take a few minutes before the color starts to change but once it begins to darken it will happen very quickly! You really can’t look away from this once it starts to bubble or you’ll likely overcook the sugar.

      It will need at least a little hair to grip on. The longer the hair the better it will grip. (Although more than about a quarter inch and it could be a bit painful.)

    I tried this and I had the mixture boiling steadily for about 30 mins and it never changed colors. Should it take that long or did I do something wrong?

      It’s hard to say. I would say that 30 minutes would be more than enough time to see is starting to change color. Did you try it with a candy thermometer? That might be helpful. Sugar cooking temperatures creep up pretty slowly and then once it hits a certain level things tend to move very rapidly. I’ve also noticed it’s harder to see the color changes in a dark pot, so a non-stick surface would make it more difficult to observe. What color was it when you let it cool? Still clear?

      Hi Jessica-
      I’ve always used traditional white granulated sugar. I’m not sure if using raw sugar or something else would change things.

    How long should it take to get to room temperature? Also, what would you say the pain level is for the bikini area?

      The wax cools very quickly when it’s not over heat and should be easy to handle within a few minutes. As for pain, it really depends on your tolerance. It hurts less than regular wax since it doesn’t adhere to the skin. The length of the hair being removed plays a part, with the longer hair being more painful. Good luck!

    It didn’t work. I was very disappointed. I sat there for almost an hour and the mixture was clear the entire time! I followed all the detections too…

      Sorry, Danni! Did you use a thermometer? That helps, but you might just live somewhere that’s too humid or has other issues that would keep it from forming.

    Hey ladies!

    Alright, I was having the same problems as many of you and then I realized that she mentions using a SMALL saucepan. I switched from a medium sized one to a small one about 5 minutes into it and as soon as I did and put it back on the burner it started to brown. Maybe make sure your pan isn’t too big. Hope that helps :)

    So it did not work for me and I tried twice, however I was successful in burning myself and making a mess. But that’s not the point if I had followed the authors advice a little more closely I may have been fine. I was so fed up and frustrated that I started to eat my wax ( What its sort of like a candy my aunt used to make?) . More like lick but whatever at first it tasted good but then after a few licks I got this sour taste in my mouth. Maybe it was just me or something but I had a bad stomach ache for the rest of the night. Therefore DO NOT EAT!

    So I did this twice tonight, the first time it was dark brown and I figure that was my fault, but the second time it was barely amber. Both times it stuck to my dish and has hardened there. What am I doing wrong?

      I’m sorry you’re having trouble! If it’s going hard and brittle it’s probably still cooking too long. It should be the consistency of a caramel or maybe a littler firmer at room temperature. Are you using a thermometer? That might help! You can also try adding a little more lemon juice to see if it’s too dry?

    Okay, I just made the wax.it was fairly easy. I tried the wax and it barely removed any hair. It did remove hair but not enough for me to say this is something I will continue to use…I must say it was interesting to try.

      Hi Trell!
      You’ll definitely have different results on different types of hair. I’ve found that it works best on my hair when I have a little length to it and when it’s fine. The coarser the hair the longer it needs to be. The longer the hair the more pain. Thanks for giving it a shot!

      Sugaring is a different precedure, did you apply the wax in the opposite way that your hair is growing then flick it in the growing direction. It’s important to wax in small patches too.

    All I’ve made twice is some burnt sugar and burnt myself pretty bad trying to shape it.. think I’ll stick to the razor for now. Needs disclaimer on all these recipes…. fingers blistered and leg blistered!

      I mention in the instructions that you should use it at room temperature, but I’ll add a little more to the description. Sorry you were burned!

    I’ve done this twice now. Once without a thermometer, once with. Neither time worked. Without- it turned amber but was overcooked. With- it hit hard ball stage but never darkened and has now turned into some white, brittle mess after it’s cooled.

    Worked great for me with a candy thermometer. I’ve made it before and I would agree that there is some trial and error. I’ve made a few batches that just didn’t turn out right. This time, I heated it a bit too much and it became too hard so I mixed in a tiny bit more water while it was still hot and it fixed the problem. If it is too sticky for you, you can either cook it more to try and get to ball wax stage or use it as is with cotton strips.

    I’ve tried this twice…the first time definitely overcooked, but the second time looked promising! good color, but turned hard as a rock once cooled to room temp. I tried to slowly reheat in the microwave on 30% power, but the wax wouldn’t adhere to the skin at all. Suggestions?

      That sounds like it was still probably a bit overcooked. When it’s the right consistency it should still be slightly soft at room temperature, sort of like cold caramel.

      It’s all about getting the ratio and temperature right. Just add more of what you need to the mix and you can try it again unless you’ve overheated the mixture. Once that’s happened you just have to toss is and try again.

    Mine also was staying clear so I tried adding more lemon just and it darkened right up! I have not tried it yet though I’m letting it cool right now

      Hi Jess-I left it on the same temperature the whole time, but you’ll want to remove it from the heat quickly once it’s ready! If it keeps cooking it will become too brittle to use.
