Inside Out Emoji Magnets

Easy to make fun emoji magnets inspired by Inside Out! I love Inside Out. Love it. We saw a screening while I was at the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration last month, but we only saw the first two thirds. Last weekend I was finally able to see the full movie at another screening. So yes, I’ve seen most of the movie twice now.

Do you ever look at someone and wonder what is going on inside their head? Disney•Pixar’s original new film “Inside Out” ventures inside the mind to find out.

Based in Headquarters, the control center inside 11-year-old Riley’s mind, five Emotions are hard at work, led by lighthearted optimist Joy (voice of Amy Poehler), whose mission is to make sure Riley stays happy. Fear (voice of Bill Hader) heads up safety, Anger (voice of Lewis Black) ensures all is fair and Disgust (voice of Mindy Kaling) prevents Riley from getting poisoned—both physically and socially. Sadness (voice of Phyllis Smith) isn’t exactly sure what her role is, and frankly, neither is anyone else.

When Riley’s family relocates to a scary new city, the Emotions are on the job, eager to help guide her through the difficult transition. But when Joy and Sadness are inadvertently swept into the far reaches of Riley’s mind—taking some of her core memories with them—Fear, Anger and Disgust are left reluctantly in charge. Joy and Sadness must venture through unfamiliar places—Long Term Memory, Imagination Land, Abstract Thought and Dream Productions—in a desperate effort to get back to Headquarters, and Riley.

Directed by Academy Award® winner Pete Docter (“Monsters, Inc.”, “Up”), produced by Jonas Rivera, p.g.a. (“Up”) and featuring an original score by Michael Giacchino (“The Incredibles,” “Ratatouille,” “Up”), Disney•Pixar’s “Inside Out” opens in theaters on June 19, 2015.

One of the things that brings me Joy is making things. That means an Inside Out inspired craft, of course!

Recognize these guys? They’re the emojis I thought did the best job of representing Disgust, Fear, Anger, Sandess and Joy. Well, the cut file version of them, anyway. I used my Silhouette to cut out multiples of each in black vinyl. I then went back and cut out the hearts for Joy’s eyes in red.

Perler Biggie BeadsTo make the emoji magnets, I applied the vinyl to melted perler beads. These are so cool to make! Perler Biggie Beads are the ones you want for this craft. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and place the beads an inch apart. Bake at 325 for about an hour. The big beads don’t come in red, so I substituted with hot pink. I’m sure Anger won’t mind.

Biggie Perler BeadsClean the tops of your perler bead discs with rubbing alcohol before you apply the vinyl. Be careful when preparing your vinyl-the eyebrows, especially, are extremely tricky. I recommend cutting more than you need knowing you’ll have a few that won’t be usable.

FacesUse your weeding hook to carefully remove the unwanted vinyl, then use transfer paper to apply the vinyl to the perler bead discs. Because you’re dealing with something that’s only half an inch wide, positioning can be tricky. After weeding and putting on the transfer paper, I cut everything out very close to the edges. It made positioning much easier. Once you’ve made your emojis, place them out in the sun for a while. The heat really helps the vinyl set.GlueUse a strong adhesive to apply magnets to the backs of your emojis. They are perfect to use when talking about emotions-you can even use them to create a mood board. Inside Out Emoji Magnets
They can also serve as a super-stylish decoration for your refrigerator.
