Starry Night Bunnies Light Up Art

Make the night a little brighter with this Starry Night Bunnies light up art DIY project! You just need a wooden canvas, paint, a drill and battery operated lights!

I feel like I should start this by saying that I’m a crafter, not an artist. My painting skills are mediocre at best. That’s why you should totally trust me when I say you can make your own Starry Night Bunnies light up art. At least you can if you’re willing to give it a try!

To make your own DIY starry night canvas you’ll need:

  • Wood Canvas (check the wood section of your craft store)
  • LED battery operated white Christmas lights.
  • Acrylic paint
  • Brushes
  • BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX Lithium Cordless Drill Driver
  • Tape
  • Gloss spray finish (optional)

Start by sketching out your design, including marking approximately where you’ll want your stars on the wood canvas. Avoid getting too close to the edges when you’re laying out your stars. I used a scrap piece of wood to drill a few test holes to see which bit would be the right size for my lights. I’d recommend you try this as well-you’ll more than likely end up needing a bigger bit than you expected!

After drilling the holes for your stars, start painting. Acrylic craft paint will require a few coats to get good coverage.

Don’t worry if it looks like a bit of a mess at first. Just continue to add coats until you get the coverage you want.

Use a detail brush to outline the bunny in black. It’s a very basic shape, but I still had a few goofs. When that happened I just layered on more paint to fix my mistakes! And I decided to add a second bunny because when I showed my best friend he said it should have a second, smaller bunny. Acrylic paint is pretty matte, so you can give it an optional coat of gloss finish like I did if you prefer that look.

Once you’ve finished painting and everything has had a chance to dry, flip over your canvas. Place the lights into the holes you drilled earlier and secure them in place with tape. I strongly recommend using LED craft lights for this project because they produce very little heat, making them a safer option.

You can hang your art, but wooden canvases have a wide enough base that they can easily sit on a tabletop. That’s perfect for making it easier to turn the lights on and off.
