This little box is kind of life changing. OK, so that might be overstating things. But it is pretty darn cool. It’s the Harmony Hub and it’s what links up all of my living room devices to the Logitech Harmony Smart Wireless Keyboard.
The Harmony Keyboard is basically the ultimate universal remote. I set up mine to control my television, DVR and Roku. It was unbelievably easy. I just downloaded the free Harmony app on my phone. The app walks you though the entire process step by step. Once everything is set up the app can actually work as a remote for your linked devices, too. All you need to get started are the model numbers of your devices.
The model numbers are easy to find-there will be a label on anything you might be linking up. Getting the number from the bottom of my Roku and the back of my cable box was easy. My television, on the other hand, was a bit of a challenge. It’s large and not something I could easily move on my own. Here’s a helpful hint: take a picture! I just reached behind my television with my phone and snapped this shot. That was much easier than trying to move it!
The kit comes with two USB nano receivers. I was able to use those to connect my television and DVR. The Roku was able to connect wirelessly. During setup I created two one-button actions. By pressing a single button I can turn on my TV and DVR to watch television programming. Pressing another button turns on the Roku and TV for watching movies. You can actually program up to six one-button actions. There are many other options available, like connecting your computer, gaming system or other smart devices. You can check online to see if your devices are compatible.
There are three things I really love about the keyboard. If you’ve ever been frustrated trying to use a remote to type on-screen you’ll appreciate just how easy things are with a keyboard in front of you. The devices are controlled without pointing. That means you can keep them in a closed cabinet without losing your remote control abilities. My favorite thing about this keyboard, though?
All of my remotes are now stored away in a drawer. The keyboard is all I need. As a bonus-it never gets lost in the sofa cushions. Now don’t let the size fool you. It’s surprisingly light weight and easy to use. It runs on two AA batteries and the hub is powered by an AC adapter.
