If you love Aladdin, the Musical Celebration of Aladdin was a must-see during last month’s D23 Expo. I was obsessed with the 1992 film. Want a sing-off? I can do a sing-off. Want to go head to head with quotes? I have you covered, there, too. I was skeptical of the live-action version they released this year, but it turned out surprisingly good. The expo’s celebration highlighted both film versions of Aladdin, along with the Broadway and Disney California Adventure interpretations.
The voices of Aladdin and Jasmine, Scott Weinger and Linda Larkin, hosted the event. Mena Massoud (Aladdin in the 2019 film) and Will Smith (via video) made special appearances. Brad Kane (Aladdin animated singing voice), Deedee Magno Hall (Jasmine in Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular at the Hyperion Theater), Clinton Greenspan (Broadway’s next Aladdin), Jamal Sims (choreographer, Aladdin live-action) and Lillias White (Hercules) gave amazing performances.
The highlight of the night, in a night full of highlights, was hearing Regina Belle and Norm Lewis sing A Whole New World. I still have all the goosebumps. Yes, I’ve watched this more than a few times.
If that didn’t get you ready to watch both versions of Aladdin again, I don’t know what will! Luckily both the animated classic and this year’s live action film are available now on Digital. Both will be heading to Blu-ray on September 10, 2019.
