Thank you to American Girl for providing the doll featured in this post.
Luciana Vega is American Girl’s Girl of the Year for 2018. She’s an 11-year-old who dreams of being the first person on Mars. She arrives with a space and science-inspired collection of accessories, but there’s always time to make more. Luciana is wearing a nebula-inspired dress. It’s the perfect inspiration for a pair of doll and me nebula pendants!
To make your pendants, you’ll need to find two small craft bottles in different sizes. Look in your craft store for bottles in the jewelry, scrapbooking and miniature sections. I found the very tiny doll-sized bottles in between the craft glitter and miniatures at my local craft store.
Decide what colors you want to use. I stuck with a traditional mix of pink, purple and blue for my nebula. Mix food color or paint with a little water. I also added some ultra fine silver glitter to each water mix.
Take a few cotton balls and pull them apart until you have small pieces of cotton fluff. Pack the cotton fluff down in the bottles and use a medicine dropper to add a few drops of colored water. Use a toothpick or similar small object to poke down the cotton fluff. It’s important that you add enough cotton fluff to fully absorb all of the colored water you add. Too much water and your nebula colors will bleed into each other too much. Sprinkle in a little more glitter.
Continue to layer your cotton fluff and colored water until you’re happy with the effect.
Finish off your nebula bottles by adding the corks and screwing in an eye screw. Add a chain and your nebula necklace is ready to wear.
And of course, don’t forget Luciana’s necklace.
