Have you ever heard the parable of the starfish?
A man was walking down a nearly deserted beach, covered with hundreds and hundreds of starfish. He came upon a boy who was picking up starfish one by one and placing them back into the water. When asked what he was doing the boy said he was saving the starfish. The man laughed and said, “You’re just one person and there are so many star fish. How can you make a difference?” The boy picked up another star fish and put it in the water. He looked back at the man and said, “I made a difference to that one.”
I heard that story long ago and it’s always stuck with me. It’s a reminder that one person can make a difference. You might not change the world, but you can change the world for one person. And that’s what Champions for Kids is all about. SIMPLE Service Projects give everyone a chance to do something for someone in their community. You might think you lack the money or time to give back. But this is about taking small steps. Doing something simple. Your projects, combined with others, will help Champions for Kids realize their goal of mobilizing 20 million people by 2020.
This month’s SIMPLE Service Project is Energizer Light Up A Life. Earlier this month I wrote about my decision to make a winter care kit for the Ronald McDonald House of Durham. I included fleece blankets, granola bars, Energizer batteries, flashlights, first aid kits, character Band Aids, crayons, markers, Wet Ones wipes, pens and pencils in my kit.
