Last week a famous groundhog saw his shadow and promised us all six more weeks of winter. While winter is often fun with it’s snow days and sledding it can also be a dangerous time. Road conditions turn treacherous and power outings are common. That’s why Energizer has teamed up with Champions for Kids to sponsor this month’s SIMPLE Service Project.
Gather your friends, family or coworkers to help create Energizer Light Up A Life Care Kits. Include things like flash lights, batteries, hand wipes, food, water and whatever else you think might be helpful in a winter (or any) emergency. Then donate your kit to the community organization of your choice and report back!
When I was thinking about this month’s SIMPLE Service Project I couldn’t help but think of the dangers of winter driving. I’m lucky enough to live within a few miles of a top notch research hospital. It’s the hospital where people from around the state (and country) visit when they need very special care for life threatening conditions. When loved ones have been in the hospital I’ve been able to drive back and forth as needed and even share my home with family members so they can be nearby. Not everyone is that lucky.
The Ronald McDonald House of Durham provides a home away from home for families with children who are critically ill. Their mission is to allow families to focus on the health and well being of their children by keeping families together in a “community of hope, comfort and empathy.” I plan to create care kits that can be shared with families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. The kits can be used there or kept in their cars in case of any emergencies while on the road. Having a sick child means many trips back and forth to the doctor, the pharmacy and the hospital. While I hope there are no emergencies, these kits can help them feel prepared.
I hope you’ll join me in completing this month’s SIMPLE Service Project and create Care Kits for a worthwhile agency in your own community.
