I make a ton of mistakes as I go along, so I always start by giving my white craft pumpkins a coat of vanilla craft paint. The colors are similar enough that it only takes one coat. Giving the pumpkin that base coat makes it easier to hide it when I inevitably have to touch something up.

After the base coat was dry I drew on my design using markers. As you can tell, it wasn’t done neatly. This was just to give me a rough idea of where everything was going to go and the scale of the design. After I had the whats and the wheres mapped out it was time to paint. Craft paint is cheap, and it shows when you’re working on a project like this in the sheer number of coats things take. Expect your pumpkins to look like a hot mess until you give it enough coats to get good coverage. If you mess up anything, don’t worry. Just cover it up with more paint!

You’ll know you’re hitting the painting finish line when your Buzz Lightyear pumpkin looks something like this. I have to say that the buttons on the front of the pumpkin looked terrible until I threw on that little dash of white highlight that made them look more button-y. All of the black lines were done with a black paint pen. For fine line work a paint pen is much easier to manage than a paint brush.

Woody was a little easier to paint than Buzz. It’s pretty hard to mess up cow print-just add a bunch of black blobs, right? Of course I forgot until my pumpkins were basically finished that Woody would need a Sheriff’s badge. The costume store came to my rescue. I bought a badge and just stuck it right on the pumpkin. Easy peasy.

Wondering what the back of my Woody and Buzz pumpkins look like? Well wonder no more. The back of both pumpkins was by far the easiest part of the painting. That’s not to say that any of this was hard. Just expect to give it all multiple coats of paint and take your time and you’ll do great!
