I was excited when I was given the opportunity to shop at Kmart for holiday decor. I was beyond thrilled when I was also given the chance to decorate it forward for someone in need of a little holiday cheer.
I immediately knew where I wanted to decorate it forward. I work at a non-profit early education agency. My coworkers are some amazing people. If anyone deserves an extra dose of holiday joy it’s them. Anyone out there who works for a non-profit knows there’s not a lot of money. And what money is available is going to be used to provide services, not to purchase decorations. That’s why I was so happy to decorate my office with items from Kmart.
Christmas came early for me when my box of trimmings arrived on my doorstep. Have you ever opened up a box and once you got everything out you wondered how it all fit in there? That’s what this was like. This box was stuffed to the brim with a huge selection of goodies from Kmart’s Golden Heritage collection. I secreted the box into the office and started digging through everything inside. I’m pretty sure I got a strange look or two as I tried to subtly walk my way through the hallways, counting doors and desks. But inspiration had struck and I wanted to trim the entire office! Even though the box had a ton of supplies, I did make a quick trip that afternoon to Kmart to get just a few more things. I bought a few packs of Trim A Home gold bows and some 3M Command strips. (I didn’t want to get in trouble for damaging and walls or doors!)
The office is set up into several cubicle areas in the front with private offices in the back. We had a little Christmas tree in my cubicle suite. It hadn’t been decorated yet, so I covered it with the adorable clip on beaded birds from the kit. The birds come with a clip on the bottom or a hanging string on the top. Since I decided to clip on the birds we simply removed the strings by unscrewing the little hook holding them into place. Things are looking more festive already!
The next stop on operation cheer was each individual cubicle. There were enough glitter gold star ornaments in the kit for everyone to get their own. The stars come in gold/gold, gold/teal and gold/red. We used a small decorating command strip hook to attach these to the wall. The Trim A Home bows I picked up were perfect for hiding the hooks.
All of the office doors got their own ornament, too. They received a similar treatment as the cubicles, but instead of stars they got wired jeweled snowflake ornaments. One coworker was in on the surprise and showed up at the office on a Saturday to help. We tried to make sure we spread all of the different colors throughout the space. The snowflakes come in gold, blue, teal and pink. Things are really looking great!
The box of goodies also contained a collection of glass ornaments in red, teal and gold. We didn’t have a Christmas tree in the office. (Well, other than the little one in my cubicle suite.) But that doesn’t mean we couldn’t decorate a tree. We decided to dress the office ficus in holiday glamour. We even put the Golden Adornment tree skirt from the kit around the tree’s base! The decorated ficus makes me smile every time I see it. Who says a Christmas tree has to be an evergreen?
Just a few more touches around the office and we’ll be done. A scattering of kings, drummers and mice around the hallway half walls was an adorable touch. The nutcrackers are actually awesome tree ornaments, but they work as well as tabletop (or in this case half wall top) decor. We just unscrewed the hanging string from the top of each ornament.
