Thank you to Disney and Marvel Studios for hosting me during the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Event.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 enters theaters on May 5, 2017. What do you need to know before you head to the movies?

It’s better than the original.

You might want to argue this point with me, but you’d be wrong. (No, really…the original was a really good movie and I’m totally OK with you liking that one better.) There’s not a grand tradition of sequels holding up to the original. The list of sequels that surpass the original is even smaller. The critical consensus is that Vol. 2 is a really good movie. If you’re a fan of Vol. 1, I’m fairly confident you’ll leave the theater a fan of Vol. 2.

You’ll dig the soundtrack.

It’s not often that people anticipate a soundtrack just as much as they anticipate the actual movie. But Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 isn’t your typical movie or typical movie soundtrack.

They had me from the trailer featuring Fleetwood Mac and they had me again when I finally saw the full movie. ELO? Cat Stevens? I die. I’m already looking forward to Vol. 3. (The soundtrack and the movie.) My GotG Spotify list is currently in heavy rotation.

You’ll want all the Baby Groot things.

Baby Groot gets a lot of screen time and he’s basically full-on, in-your-face adorable the entire movie. I traveled home from the premiere with bags and bags of Guardians merch and I’m keeping all of the Baby Groot stuff for me.

As in this is my office and that is my Baby Groot and everyone needs to keep their hand off. Trust me…if you weren’t already a fan, the opening scene is going to convert you immediately.

It’ll make you feel all the things.

During the premiere, writer and director James Gunn took to the stage and dedicated the film to his parents. And the film really is about family. Peter finally meets his father. Nebula is back in Gamora’s life. Things are fairly complicated all around. You expect to laugh a lot during a Guardians film. You might not expect to cry, but…there’s a good chance it’s going to happen. Bring some tissues just in case.

Stay until the end. The very end.

This should go without saying, but I still feel compelled to give the warning. There’s a lot going on at the end of the film. A lot. The credits are not your sign to head to the car. Stay put. Watch closely. It’s worth it.

And there’s a huge, massive, audience gasping moment within all of that. (At least for those who know their Marvel characters.) And we tried really hard to get Kevin Feige and James Gunn to spill a few secrets the next day. They stubbornly refused. But trust me, you’ll have theories for days afterwards.
