If you have a child between the ages of 5 and 12 there’s a fun new contest you can enter. All you need to do is cook a healthy rice based dish with your child. Film a video no longer than three minutes of your child talking about what they learned while cooking. Upload the video on the Uncle Ben’s Facebook page and you could win.
What can you win, you ask? Hold on to your hats, this is big. The winner will receive $20,000, an appearance on the Rachel Ray show, and a $50,000 makeover for their child’s school cafeteria. (See? Told you this was big! Like really, really big!) The videos should only feature one child, but if you have have more than one child you can submit additional videos. (Up to five.) More chances to win!
Cooking with your children is a great activity. Not only is it a time to bond, but they’re also learning science and math skills at the same time. Plus, cooking meals together is the perfect time to foster healthy eating habits. Cooking healthy means eating healthy. And children are much more likely to try new things that they have cooked themselves. (Great idea for those picky eaters, huh?)
A great place to start is with a healthy choice like Uncle Ben’s whole grain brown rice. (Whole grains are important, and who doesn’t love rice?) And nothing goes better with rice than a variety of colorful vegetables. You can even find recipes to get your started on the Uncle Ben’s website. There’s a really cool feature there, too. Just type in what you have on hand and you’ll get recipes that match the ingredients you listed. I typed in chicken, brown rice and spinach and got back options like Thai salad with whole grain brown rice & chicken and brown rice veggie pizza. Mmm…brown rice veggie pizza… How easy is that? No more excuses that you have nothing to cook. (Well, maybe…if you saw my pantry you could find one, but, in general…)
So what are you waiting for? Grab your child and get to the kitchen to start cooking. There’s a huge prize to be won, but even more importantly you’ll be having a great time with your kids and helping to start them on their own healthy cooking journey. Don’t forget to let me know when to set my DVR to catch you on the Rachel Ray show!
