Thank you to American Girl for sending the doll and accessories that inspired this tassel keychain DIY!
As soon as American Girl announces their Girl of the Year, I immediately start to think of all of the DIY possibilities. This year I was inspired by 2020 Girl of the Year Joss Kendrick to make a fun tassel keychain!
Joss is a California girl who loves to surf. She also has hearing loss, and American Girl has partnered with the Hearing Loss Association of America to support education and advocacy. I love that Amerian Girl takes the time to research all of their girls to make sure they get their stories just right.
I also love the details that American Girl puts into all of the fun clothing and accessories. I was specifically obsessed, as I’m prone to do, with the tiny little tassel keychain in Joss’ accessory collection.
That, of course, meant I had to try to make my own! I was thrilled to find some faux suede fringe at my local fabric and craft store. Buying fringe makes this project quick and easy!
I cut off a strip at the top of the fringe and used that piece of faux suede to form the base for the tassel. I glued the ends of the strip together around a keyring.
I placed a thin bead of glue on the top of the fringe and slowly wound it around the piece glued to the keyring. It’s easiest to work just an inch or two at a time to avoid getting too much glue on things. Actually, getting too much glue on things is the only way you can mess this up!
Once I was happy with the size of my tassel, I trimmed off the remainder of the fringe. Once the glue is dry, the keychain is ready to use!
