Attending the Mary Poppins Returns premiere means making more Disney movie gifts! This time I made DIY Mary Poppins Kite Ornaments, inspired by my favorite song (Let’s Go Fly A Kite) in the original Mary Poppins film. (Make sure you take a look at all of my previous Disney gifts while you’re here!)
Mary Poppins Kite Ornament Supplies
These ornaments are so easy-it’s definitely a Disney craft that kids can help you make. You’ll need:
- Green Craft Foam
- Yellow Washi Tape
- Newsprint Scrapbook Paper
- Bamboo Skewers
- Satin Craft Varnish
- Hot Glue
- Mod Podge or School Glue
- String
- Toothpick
- Scissors
Start by cutting out your kite shape from green craft foam. I always like to cover my craft foam with parchment paper and press it with a hot iron. This causes the foam to shrink a bit and gives it a nicer texture. You can consider this an optional step.
Apply the yellow washi tape along opposite sides of the foam kite, two layers thick. After trimming the tape, apply more to the other two sides of the kite. Trim off each corner of the foam kite and cover the back in satin varnish. This will help keep the washi tape from peeling up.
Rip up the newsprint scrapbook paper into small pieces and apply it to the front of the foam kite with mod podge or school glue to form the patches. Finish the front of the kite with a coat of satin varnish.
Cut bamboo skewers to size and use hot glue to add them to the back of your kite.
