Back when I was in college a small patch of itchy skin appeared on one of my palms. I didn’t know it at the time but that was the beginning of a lifelong struggle with eczema and other skin problems. In my case I wasn’t even properly diagnosed until I visited the research dermatologist at UNC Hospitals. It wasn’t that my case was particularly bad, it’s just that it didn’t look like “typical eczema” to most doctors. Of course there’s really no such thing as “typical eczema” anyway. It presents in lots of different ways on different people.
In my case I tend to get eczema most often on my palms, ankles and elbows. It’s extremely itchy, and of course we all know what happens when you scratch something too much. It just gets that much worse. I’ve successfully treated my eczema with prescriptions before, but I hate having to make an appointment to visit the dermatologist every time I have a flare up. Not to mention I don’t love how the prescription ointments actually feel going on.
The cold weather tends to make my eczema worse, but this winter I’m ready. Aveeno Active Naturals Eczema Therapy is helping me fight my eczema with their two step system. Step 1? Soak. Easy enough, right? Just take a bath using the oatmeal bath treatment. Its active ingredient is 100% colloidal oatmeal. (Although I love a good long soak in this case you don’t want to stay in the tub too long since soaking too much can help to dry out the skin.) Step 2? Seal in moisture with the moisturizing cream. Even though I don’t have a current outbreak of eczema I’m using the cream almost daily. I can feel my hands starting to get itchy and dry and the cream stops it in its tracks. (I’m fairly certain without it I’d already have my first eczema flare up of the season.) As a bonus my hands don’t feel oily and it doesn’t feel like it’s sitting on top of my skins like it was with many of my prescription treatments.
Aveeno Eczema Therapy is dermatologist tested and it’s accepted by the National Eczema Association. There’s even an Aveeno Baby line of the Eczema Therapy that includes bath treatments, moisturizing cream and moisturizing wash.
