Inside Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger

Thank you to Disney and Marvel Studios for hosting me during the #AntManAndTheWaspEvent, which included a Cloak & Dagger screening and Q&A.

Have you been watching Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger? If you are, you’re in good company. The series premiere was Freeform’s biggest series launch in over two years.

Cloak & Dagger follows Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph), two teenagers who find themselves with superpowers. Tandy can emit daggers of light and Tyrone can engulf people in darkness.

We sat down with Executive Producer Joe Pokaski, Andrea Roth (“Melissa Bowen”), Miles Mussenden (“Otis Johnson”) and VP of Original Programing for Marvel TV Tom Lieber to talk about the future of the show. What did we learn?

Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger

Someone once told Joe Pokaski that the hardest two points in a woman’s life are when she’s 16 and when her daughter’s 16. He used that as the inspiration for the storyline between Tandy and her mother Melissa. Although Melissa is seriously struggling now, don’t be surprised when she has a heroic arc in the future.

Cloak & Dagger utilizes flashbacks to tell some of the story. When episode 8 arrives, expect that to serve as a second part to the series pilot. It serves as the emotional origin story for several characters.

Tandy and Tyrone cross over into a lot of other Marvel stories in the comics, and they’d love to do that on television as well. Don’t expect it this season, but hopefully down the road. And speaking of the comics, if you’re a fan of the costumes, you might see a little of that in the future. Just don’t expect the dagger slit in Tandy’s costume. They’re planning to avoid that part of it.

The New Orleans setting and the music of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger are both very purposeful parts of the storytelling. They moved the the show to New Orleans to take advantage of the city’s history. They even work with writers who have connections to New Orleans. As for the music, they listen to hundreds of songs to select the right one for each episode.

You can catch the adventures of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger each Thursday at 8pm on Freeform.
