Thank you to Disney and Marvel Studios for hosting me during the Ant-Man and the Wasp event, which included this interview with Michael Douglas.
Michael Douglas returns to the role of Hank Pym in Marvel Studio’s Ant-Man and the Wasp. After watching the original Ant-Man film, Michael Douglas’ son Dylan said, “[Do] a sequel if they offer it to you.”
Douglas had no qualms about returning to a familiar role. “You don’t have to introduce yourself again. You know each other. There’s a comfort factor which makes it much easier.”
The role of Hank Pym also means returning to a supporting role after a career full of leads. He was happy to relinquish that responsibility to Paul Rudd in Ant-Man and the Wasp. “He’s just a great guy, so it sets the tone.”
That doesn’t mean he’s not a little jealous of Paul’s opportunities to ad lib when they’re filming. “Paul will just come in with some one-liner and steal the scene.”
Evangeline Lilly returns as Pym’s daughter, Hope van Dyne. She’ll also be suiting up as the Wasp in this film. Douglas remembers shooting the stinger for the original Ant-Man film when Hope is first shown the Wasp suit. “There’s this look in her eye, as Hope, when she sees her mother’s suit, but what I was looking at her when she was doing the scene, I saw Evangeline going, ‘I’m going to be a superhero.'”
It’s not only Rudd and Lilly who suit up in the film. Douglas gets his own superhero moment in Ant-Man and the Wasp. “I got my old suit back…I might as well get back in there again.”
So does this mean we’ll get to see Hank Pym as his version of the Ant-Man in future films? “If I open my mouth, a blowgun… It’s a Marvel blowgun…” So no spoilers on that front. Yet…
Douglas is thrilled with the early response to Ant-Man and the Wasp. “One of the joys of this business is you make a movie like this, it’s a worldwide success, and the audiences from every continent go to see this movie and they laugh like we laugh, they move like [we] move, and it just brings everybody closer together. It’s actually the aspect of our industry which I admire the most, and it seems like a good time that we need that.”
