Thank you to Marvel Studios for hosting me during the Infinity War Event and this Black Panther Q&A.
Black Panther is now available on Digital HD, Movies Anywhere, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD. While in LA for the Infinity War premiere, we were lucky enough to sit down with Nate Moore, Executive Producer of the film to talk about the exciting bonus features that are coming with the home release.
Where do all they find the ideas for their bonus features? They start with a brainstorming session where people pitch their ideas. They know that the fans expect deleted scenes and gag reels, so those clips are gathered throughout production. As for the rest? “Once we get a sense of what people are responding to out in the world, we can craft our features based on that,” says Nate. “This movie just happened to have a lot of really in-depth stuff because the building of Wakanda was so complicated. Unlike other films, like Captain America…that world is a bit more familiar to audiences, so there’s less to tell. We had a lot of stories to tell from this one.”
They’re also excited to share some of the deleted scenes on the home release that were difficult to cut. “There’s a great scene in the deleted scenes between Okoye and W’Kabi, and it’s after Killmonger has taken the throne,” according to Nate. “It’s a fantastic scene. Danai and Daniel Kaluuya do a fantastic job in it. And we kept it in every cut of the movie through testing because we thought it was so important for people to understand the relationship, and because it seemed so good frankly. And when we pulled it, we found that audiences understood just as well, but the pace issue we had for that part of the movie went away.”
The Black Panther Blu-ray also has something totally unique. “We did a roundtable with some of the actual writers of the comic,” says Nate. “To hear from the people who create the character, Don McGregor who did a run in Jungle Action, Christopher Priest who did sort of a seminal run in the ‘90s and then Ta-Nehisi Coates is doing the run now with Ryan and Joe Robert Cole who cowrote the movie.” You’ll get to hear what they thought worked, what didn’t, and what they found challenging about the character as they were writing.
You can watch these and more when you watch Black Panther on Blu-Ray or stream in Digital HD.
