I still remember at around 8 years old asking my mother almost every morning for Leia hair. She gave it a go, but my hair was not even a little bit cooperative. I asked her recently if she remembered this, but she had more than likely blocked it out. Or the daily struggle of dealing with my ridiculously long and pin straight hair was just one big blur. If only we had thought to make this headband back then. My morning routine could have been cut down to seconds!
- A headband
- Thick brown yarn
- Brown felt
- Hot glue
- Elastic bands
The headband pictured was made with twenty strands of yarn (ten on each side) that were about 32″ long. It’s the perfect size for a child, but if you’re making this for an adult you’ll want to size up!
Make two bundles of yarn that are each the same length. Secure each end with an elastic and trim off excess yarn.
Add a dot of hot glue to your felt and start to twist your bundled yarn. Make sure you cover the starting point. You’ll want to secure each twist with hot glue, with the glue placed towards the inside of the twist.
Finish off your twists by tucking the end under the previous twist and securing with glue. At this point remember that it’s a bit like doing your eyebrows. Your Leia buns will be sisters, not twins.
You’ll also more than likely have a fair amount of hot glue spiderwebs floating around at this point. Don’t worry-we’ll take care of those later.
Take more yarn and hot glue and cover your headband. Use a very small amount of hot glue or it will show through the yarn.
Carefully trim around the edges of the felt, making sure you don’t cut your yarn. (This is why it was important to keep the glue towards the inside of the twists.)
Use more hot glue to attach the yarn buns to the headband. Cut off a rectangle of felt and attach over the inside of headband for extra security.
If any hot glue is exposed, just hit your new headband with a few blasts from your hair dryer on high heat. It will melt right in and disappear.
Your Princess Leia yarn headband is now ready to wear!
