When I was a kid, I was pretty bad at two things: road trips and spelling. Luckily I’m going to share a quick road trip tip and a fun road trip spelling game that might make both a little easier.

I live in the land of the pines. That means we currently have a coating of lime green pine pollen on pretty much everything. I also have some pretty wicked allergies. Both make this time of year fairly miserable. That’s why as part of my road trip prep I’m changing out my FRAM Fresh Breeze® cabin air filter with a brand new one from Walmart. You should follow recommended change intervals as noted in your vehicle owner’s manual, but in general they should be changed once a year or every 12,000 miles. This filter helps to clean the air inside of your car. The FRAM Fresh Breeze® cabin air filter can keep  98%* of dust, dirt and allergens from entering your vehicle!

To change out my cabin air filter, I did a quick search on the FRAM website find a video for my particular model. I watched that and then headed out to my car. I opened the glove box and then squeezed each side on the back of the glove back to move it down. That exposed the tray where my cabin air filter sits. I pulled it out and removed the old filter and replaced it with the new one. Pay attention to the air flow indicators on the filter to make sure you’re installing it correctly!

Look at all of the stuff my old filter caught! Ewwww! And keep in mind…that’s just the stuff you can see! Clean car air? That’s step one in my road trip prep. Step two? Activities!

To make my road trip spelling game, you’ll need:

  • Alphabet Magnets (look for these when shopping on the aisle where you find kitchen gadgets)
  • Metal Lunch Box
  • Magnet Tape
  • Printout of Spelling Words

You can print out your words on cardstock or printer paper. To make them a little more durable I ran them through my laminator, but you can consider that an optional step. Cut out your words and add a small piece of magnet tape.

You can include pictures of the words for early readers when you’re making your printouts.

You can also use just the words themselves. It’s surprisingly challenging to dig through all of the magnets to spell out the words. Plus each time a child complete the word it’s helping to reinforce the spelling in their memory. This is a great way to practice for a spelling test! Plus everything stores away in the lunch box, making it mess free!
