Ready To Feel Old? Safety Brings Some Serious 2006 Nostalgia

I’m old enough that when you say 2006 I think it was just a few years ago. But I’m also good enough at math to figure out that it was actually 14 years ago. A child born in 2006 would be a freshman in high school now! The funny thing about going 14 years into the past is that it brings some really fun retro (yes, I hate myself for calling 2006-anything retro) vibes to the upcoming Disney+ film Safety.

Corinne Foxx as Kaycee in SAFETY, exclusively on Disney+.

The majority of the Safety cast were in their tweens in 2006. For Corinne Foxx, who plays Kaycee, the film provided her with a chance to realize a childhood wish. “The most exciting part for me is I got to drive this turquoise VW Bug… That was my dream car!”

The technology in the film was retro, too. “I had a Sidekick and all that,” says Jay Reeves, who plays Ray in the film. Like many kids in the mid-2000s, Jay had to wait until he was 18 before he got his first phone. “I wanted a flip phone so bad…it was definitely like a wish come true.”

Elijah Shane Bell as Pop, Thaddeus J. Mixson as Fahmarr, Isaac Bell as Fresh, Hunter Sansone as Daniel,

Just because you weren’t around in 2006, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some of the vintage perks. “For me, it was the baggy clothes,” says Thaddeus J. Mixson II who plays Fay. At only 12 years old, the film is set two years before he was born. “The whole style had just changed, so it was just really cool for me to be able to wear baggy clothes”

The soundtrack provided another opportunity to bring in nostalgia from 2006. “The music really brought me back,” according to Producer Mark Ciardi. “That party scene with the Lean Back, it was so much fun. It was an amazing soundtrack and I’m excited for everybody to hear it.”

Safety begins streaming December 11, 2020, exclusively on Disney+.
