It all started when I celebrated Thanksgiving with a message from my old service provider. They were letting me know I had reached 90% of my text messaging limit. Yes, I was the only person in the world who was still stuck on a plan with a set number of text messages. I had looked into going unlimited but it was going to jack my service plan up sky high. I was on a totally old plan that was over $80 a month and I wasn’t willing to give it up. I had unlimited data. (I need unlimited data.) To move to one of the newer service plans with more text messages it would add about $40 to my bill. Or I could lose my unlimited data. (And I need unlimited data. We already discussed this…)
Enter Best Buy Mobile Specialty Stores. I spend the entire weekend after Thanksgiving shopping anyway. Best Buy Mobile Specialty Stores are located in malls and shopping centers. It’s like they popped out the cell phone section from your local Best Buy and placed it beside the MAC store. Who wouldn’t love that? Technology and makeup beside each other…it’s like they know me.
Now here’s where this gets even sweeter. Remember how I told you guys I was back in school? No? OK…I’ll catch you up. Basically I graduated from college a few million years ago. I needed nine more hours of education coursework for a new certification at work. So it has been back to school for me. (Seven hours down, two more to go!)
So I can’t claim to have taken my new student life with totally good grace. But it does have its benefits. Student discounts? Yes, please! And I just found what might be the best student discount of all: 12 months of free talk, text and data from Sprint!
So how does it work? It’s pretty darn easy. Visit your local Best Buy Mobile Specialty Store. Peruse the available phones for the Sprint Unlimited, My Way plan.
The display will show you the special student offer price for each phone. (And this is really the hardest part of all…what phone will you get?)
Now if your Best Buy Mobile Specialty Store is like my Best Buy Mobile Specialty Store the iPhones are in their own special little area. But never fear…they’re totally a part of the plan, too.
And now here’s the part where I give you all of the specs and told you how I came to my highly informed and well advised decision. I kid…I kid. I wanted the iPhone 5S because I thought it was pretty. There. I said it. It was pretty and I bought it.
OK, that’s not entirely true, either. I spent a long time talking to the oh so helpful blue shirt at the Best Buy Mobile Specialty Store. They don’t work on commission so he had no incentive to push me one way or another. He answered all of my questions about all of the phones. And then he told me he could tell I wanted the gold iPhone. (I know it kinda looks like I got the silver one but I swear it’s the gold.) Yes. I’m that girl.
So I bought the iPhone. (Sorry, Samsung…I still love you.) The team at Best Buy Mobile even ported over my number, helped set up my phone and transferred over all of my contacts. I walked out of the store with my phone completely set! (Well, there was the whole setting up of the Starbucks app thing…but I suppose sometimes a girls just got to take some personal responsibility.) `
And now I confess to something else. I was totally convinced this deal wasn’t going to work. I just knew that when I submitted my proof of eligibility (I sent in a copy of my receipt for my school tuition) that they were going to somehow tell me I wasn’t eligible. That I had to be taking more than one class at a time. Or that I needed to be a “traditional” student. Or, you know, something that would make this whole thing a big mess. But guess what? It worked! All of that stress for nothing. It was easy! I just scanned my receipt from school and uploaded it via their website. The next day I got an email telling me I was all set. Easy, peasy!
Oh, and you see that $10 thing? That’s how much I’m paying for my service every month. It would have been free but I opted for the unlimited data instead of just the 1GB that was included. So for $10 a month I get unlimited talk, unlimited text and unlimited data. Pretty cool, right? I’m saving over $800 a year!
