That quintessential slice of the ’90s, Supermarket Sweep, is back and bigger than ever. Get ready to grab the inflatables, grind the coffee, and stuff a cart full of frozen turkeys as contestants compete for a grand prize of $100,000!
It’s no surprise that the first thing to catch my eye during the preview is the wardrobe. Contestants in the ’90s wore numbered sweatshirts with white collars. The Supermarket Sweep sweatshirts are back, but this time there’s a twist. “When you came to set you got to pick your color from nine different colors,” according to Executive Producer, Alycia Rossiter. “Then you got to say ‘my vibe is flutter sleeves’ or ‘my vibe is cowboy fringe’.” That’s when costume designer Seth Chernoff gets to work, along with a seamstress, creating a personalized look for each contestant.
“Everybody gets to do their own style,” says host Leslie Jones. “You actually see their personality when they come out to do the big sweep.” That means you’ll see things like firemen in suspenders and former cheerleaders dressed like – you guessed it – cheerleaders!
You can catch the sweatshirt creativity for yourself on Supermarket Sweep, airing Sundays on ABC at 8|7c.
