Did you know it’s #NationalPlayDohDay? I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than with my favorite heroes in a half shell, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
The secret to any crafting dough is the perfect recipe. I’ve made plenty of batches of “no cook” dough, but if you really want the best consistency you’ll want to make this stove-top version.
You’ll need:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup water
- 6 Tbsp salt
- 2 tsp cream of tartar
- 1 Tbsp vegetable oil
- Food color
And, in full turtle-speak, here’s how you make it:
- Throw all the dry ingredients into a mixing bowl and give it a whirl. Next, pour in the wet stuff and stir some more.
- Now comes the real action! Get that dough into a little pot on the stove over medium heat. Keep that stirring game strong, dudes! At first, it’s gonna look like pancake batter, but don’t bail on it – pretty soon it will be a ball of dough!
- Let it cool for a bit and split the dough into bowls, depending on how many colors you want. Each of us turtles has our own shade of green, so try and nail that if you can! Remember to keep those bowls wrapped up in plastic to keep the dough from getting crusty!
- Time to bring some color to this party! Take out a chunk of dough, toss it into a plastic bag and drop in a few drops of food coloring. Zip it up tight and start kneading it! Once it’s looking somewhat mixed, give it another good kneading with your hands.
- Now that you’ve got your colors, it’s time for some Turtle Power! Cover your workspace with paper, ‘cause things are about to get messy! Knead, roll, and mash that dough into the shape of your favorite Turtle Tot’s face!
Playing with the food coloring to get just the right shades of green was my favorite part!
When it comes to making the faces, I always find it helpful to look at the toys of the characters. Toys tend to break down the features into really simple shapes that are easy to copy.
