Raya and the Last Dragon is currently slated to enter theaters on Thanksgiving 2020. The fantasy-action-adventure film introduces Raya, a lone warrior from the fantasy kingdom of Kumandra who teams up with a crew of misfits in her quest to find the Last Dragon and bring light and unity back to their world. The film, inspired by the cultures of Southeast Asia, will also feature the talents of two women who worked on the 2018 blockbuster Crazy Rich Asians.
Adele Lim is the screenwriter for Raya and the Last Dragon. Lim co-wrote the script for Crazy Rich Asians, and has served as a writer for multiple television shows. Lim reports that the script will combine her childhood love of Disney classics and Hong Kong action films.
Awkwafina, breakout star of Ocean’s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians, will provide the voice of Sisu. Sisu is the Last Dragon, and will appear in both dragon and human form in the film.
The film will be directed by Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins (Big Hero 6, Frozen) and produced by Osnat Shurer (Moana). Raya and the Last Dragon opens in U.S. theaters on November 25, 2020.
