When I saw all of the fun images in the press kit for The Little Mermaid‘s 30th Anniversary Blu-ray release, I immediately knew I wanted to make something with shrink plastic. I’ve already made necklaces for Ant-Man and the Wasp and Ralph Breaks The Internet, so this time I thought it would be fun to make pins.
Working with shrink plastic is so easy. Just print out The Little Mermaid images onto a sheet of shrink plastic. (They’ll print out lightly on purpose.) Cut them out and lay them on a sheet of parchment paper. Bake at 350 degrees until they’re fully shrunk, then immediately press them down with something hard and flat to keep the edges from curling up.
I wanted to play around with a few new techniques, so I outlined the images with a gold paint pen. (I also tried this with permanent marker but was less successful.) I then gave a careful coating of clear embossing powder and then baked in the oven again to add a protective and glossy finish.
Use a strong glue like E6000 to adhere pin backs to the back of each image. Once that’s dry your The Little Mermaid Shrink Plastic Pins will be ready to wear!
The Little Mermaid is joining the Walt Disney Signature Collection in celebration of it’s 30th anniversary. The new edition is already available on Movies Anywhere. You can purchase the DVD and Blu-ray on February 26, 2019.
