The Muppets Are Back!

This post is brought to you by Disney/ABC #TheMuppets.

D23 EXPO 2015 - D23 EXPO, the ultimate Disney fan event, brings together all the past, present and future of Disney entertainment under one roof. Taking place August 14-16, this year marks the fourth D23 EXPO at the Anaheim Convention Center and promises to be the biggest and most spectacular yet. (Disney/Image Group LA) Kevin Smokler, Steve Whitmire, Bill Barreta, Eric Jacobson and Matt Vogel.

Jim Henson was one of my childhood heroes. I’ve seen every episode of The Muppet Show multiple times. I tuned into Sesame Street long past the age of appropriateness just to see his creatures. Movies like The Dark Crystal and  Labyrinth helped create my lifelong love of fantasy. I even talked about him in one of my scholarship interviews back in high school.

Attending “The Magic Behind The Muppets” last month at D23 EXPO was a total bucket list experience for me. I still can’t believe that we were just feet away from Muppeteers Dave Goelz, Steve Whitmire, Bill Barretta, Eric Jacobson and Matt Vogel. With their Muppets. Real, actual Muppets. It was amazing to see the legacy of Jim Henson live on.

The entire panel was hilarious, but you can catch one of the funniest moments in the recap video at 0:23.

We learned during the panel that the new show, The Muppets, is going to be done mockumentary style. It’s a modern tribute to everyone’s favorite part of The Muppet Show: the backstage antics. Instead of a variety show, this time around they’re filming Miss Piggy’s late night talk show.

I can also let you in on a little secret. I’ve already caught the first two episodes. It has that special irreverent Muppet-style humor that was always a part of The Muppet Show. You know that thing where you see something you watched as a kid as an adult and you finally get all of the jokes that went right over your head originally because you were a kid? That.

The Muppets air Tuesday nights at 8pm, starting with tonight’s pilot, “Pig Girls Don’t Cry”.

Miss Piggy is furious that Kermit booked Elizabeth Banks as a guest on her late night talk show Up Late with Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear meets his girlfriend’s parents, and Grammy Award-winning rock band Imagine Dragons performs their new single “Roots”.

It’s all of the characters you love,  but it feels completely new. And yet somehow it feels the same. That’s a pretty impressive feat there.

And if you needed another hint that it’s an all new The Muppets, they’re all on social media!
