Thank you to Sony Home Entertainment for sending me a box of puppet supplies that inspired these DIY Personalized Puppets. A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood is available now on Digital and Blu-ray! The supplies listed in this post include affiliate links.
I’m a huge fan of Mister Rogers. First as a preschooler who loved his show, next as an early educator who utilized the resources from his early learning center. I always loved how he used puppets as a way to teach children to express their emotions. How can you celebrate the home release of A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood, the film that shows just how much of a hero Mister Rogers is? Turn yourself into a puppet!
How To Make Personalized Puppets
To make your own personalized puppets, you’ll need:
I added a few photos to a blank page in Canva, then printed them out on regular copy paper as a first step. I wanted to make sure I had the sizes of the photos just right before I went on to the more expensive printable canvas. You can use whatever photos you like, but I asked for faces showing different emotions and I think they turned out really cute. Once you’re happy that you have the right sizes, go ahead and load your printer with the printable canvas and print them out.
Cut out around the faces, peel off the backing, then press them on your puppet blanks. The adhesive on the printable canvas isn’t super strong, but pressing with a hot iron will help them stick. If they still want to peel up, just add a bit of fabric glue.
Have fun decorating your puppets however you’d like. Buttons, rhinestones, glitter…what you want to add!
