I almost never have a sandwich that isn’t grilled in some way. What can I say? Nothing beats a warm, melty, cheesy sandwich when it comes to comfort food. And the ultimate in comfort food? The grilled cheese, naturally. I’ve had fun with spins on the grilled cheese theme before, but there’s something to be said for the classic version. Of course classic doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to make it the ultimate sandwich experience. A few simple tips can kick your grilled cheese experience up a notch.
Start with the best ingredients. You don’t need to use processed cheese. Treat yourself to the good stuff, like a nice sharp cheddar. Mixing more than one cheese? Totally OK!
Bread is the foundation of the sandwich, so make sure you’ve selected something that’s worthy. Roman Meal bread is always baked fresh, locally with regional bakeries across the United States. Roman Meal’s Whole Grains are a good source for vitamin D, calcium, and fiber, too. Whole grains help with digestion and weight management, and studies show they may reduce the risk of heart disease. Talk about your comfort food!
I love making grilled cheese sandwiches on my Panini Press. They’re done twice as quickly since there’s no need to flip them over. It also makes it super easy to use shredded cheese in your sandwich.
Have you ever had a grilled cheese that was burned on the outside before the cheese was melted on the inside? I have a tip. Add a little mayo to your butter. Trust me, I actually don’t like mayo but it works. The mayo allows the sandwich to cook longer without burning. As long as you don’t add too much you can’t even taste the difference. And call me crazy, but a grilled cheese just has to be cut on the diagonal. I don’t know why. It just makes the sandwich.
