Celebrate Earth Day with this fun upcycle project: Create a plastic bottle reed diffuser in just minutes! It’s the perfect way to keep those bottles out of landfills and diffuse your favorite scents throughout your home.
Honest® Tea Unsweet Peach Ginger Tea is a great inspiration for your scent. Why not diffuse a mix of peach and ginger essential oils? This no added sugar tea is light and refreshing-it’s perfect for spring…just like the scents of peach and ginger in your home! You can now find organic, Fair Trade Honest® Tea at Kroger.
Of course there’s plenty of other options to spark some inspiration. Try Pomegranate, Half & Half, Honey Green Tea or Peach White Tea. They’re all brewed with real tea leaves, just like you’d brew at home. Since there’s no sugar added, it’s not too sweet.Honest® Tea is perfect to take along on a sunny walk or to a day at the beach.
When you’ve finished your Honest® Tea, save the bottle and grab a few rolls of your favorite washi tape.
Technically you could skip this part. Especially if you want to tuck your diffuser on a shelf or in some out of the way corner. I, however, enjoy covering as many things as possible in washi tape.
After you’ve covered the entire bottle in washi, give it a few coats of decoupage medium. You can use your favorite finish here, but I gotta tell you I always like the look of gloss over washi tape.
To turn your washi taped bottle into a reed diffuser you’ll need your essential oils, a carrier oil and reeds. You can order a box of reeds online for super cheap, but in a pinch you can just use bamboo kitchen skewers. They’re pretty much the same thing except the reeds meant for diffusing have a slightly rougher finish and absorb a the oil a little more quickly.
If your reeds are a little short for yourHonest® Tea bottle, add some sand or gravel to the bottom. Bonus-this will hep keep the bottle from accidentally tipping over! Add about 1/4 cup of your carrier oil and 20 drops of essential oil into the bottle and add your reeds. Make sure this is enough to cover any sand or gravel you added. If not, increase the amount of oils accordingly.
To get the scent going, turn over your reeds after a few hours of soaking. After that, turn over the reeds in your DIY reed diffuser every few weeks to refresh the scent!
Find your own inspiration in the Honest® Tea social hub! You’ll also find a digital coupon for $.25 off your next bottle. (And it can be used up to five times in one transaction at Kroger and Kroger banner stores!)
