Thank you to American Girl for providing the doll featured in this post.
Know a fan of American Girl’s WellieWishers heading back to school? This WellieWishers-inspired DIY pencil case would be the perfect addition to their backpack.
The design for this pencil case is inspired by WellieWishers Emerson’s skirt. You can use the same basic supplies and idea to create a pencil bag inspired by any of the WellieWishers.
WellieWishers DIY Pencil Case
To make your own WellieWishers pencil case, you’ll need:
- Gallon Sized Plastic Zipper Bag
- Pink Duct Tape
- Star Paper Punch
- Scissors or Craft Knife
- Cutting Mat or other Non-Stick Surface
- Purple Vinyl
- Silver Permanent Marker
Start by cutting your plastic zipper bag to the length you would like your pencil case to be. Five inches is a good length if you can’t make up your mind.
Carefully cover the bag with strips of colored duct tape, starting just below the top of the bag. If using a bag with a slider, start the tape just below the slider, making sure you allow room for the slider to move back and forth. Make sure you’re working on a surface that won’t get damaged if the duct tape sticks to it. I use my cutting mat, but a plastic cutting board works well, too.
Close off the bottom of the bag by folding over a piece of tape, trimming off the edges. Add a second layer of duct tape to the bag if you need to cover up any wrinkly spots or rough edges.
Using a star paper punch, punch out stars from dark purple vinyl. Punching works best when you punch through the vinyl side rather than the backing side.
Peel off the backing and apply the stars to your pencil case. Finish things off by adding silver polka dots with a permanent marker.
Add your pencils, markers and pens, and your pencil case is ready to head back to school!
